Not for the Faint of Heart

Hubby had a doctor's appointment today and after taking him 2 weeks ago and waiting 2 hours to see the doctor, I knew to mark the full day off the calendar today. No tax clients for me.. Once again we waited another 2 hours for him to get his first cataract removed. Now, I ask you. Why do they bother making appointments for us to keep, if they aren't going to keep theirs? Inquiring minds want to know. I'm happy to report he did just fine, I take him on Tuesday for his post op. But I digress. This is not a post about hubby's doctors appointments.
Once we got home and I got him settled I put my wheels in motion. Not one to sit idle I headed downstairs to the office to get busy.
One thing I've learned after all the water damage we had in August, is that I don't have to hang onto "everything". We've been self employed all our married life and have had a lot of paperwork over the years.. Well, today was a day to purge "more" of the paperwork. I got little black box out , fondly known as a shredder and got to work. Little black box churned and churned..

Much to my dismay, little black box churned so much he burnt himself out. Yes. he quit. There were no negotiations. He just up and quit.. walked right off the job. Now, I ask you .. How could he do this to me? Right in the "middle" of a big job. Is there no communication any more ? Does one not respect their employer any more? Apparently not.. :-(
No wonder little black box walked off the job. Look at this bag of shredding. Bless his little heart he was just worn out. ( I almost felt sorry for him, but I still had a ton of work to do). lol
So.. out comes the back up. Little white box with great white teeth.
Little white box with great white teeth got right to work.....
Little white box with great white teeth shredded and shredded and shredded....
Until at last, we had another bag of shredding.
As a final report: There are many files to go, but I progress is being made. I hope to have 1 full file cabinet completely empty by the end of the week. That leaves 3 more file cabinets to go my friends. Many of you have been asking when I plan to post the updates on the office makeover. I hope to have things ready to go soon. I'm sure you're wondering what does purging files have to do with showing the makeover after the water damage? Not a lot really.. just one of those little idiosyncrasy's I have. I want everything in order. lol
So...back to work for me... hugs ~lynne~

I had to laugh bz I have files that I have to purge every year too from being self-employed. I work for a national corporation now but had my own business for years. I burn out a shredder every year or two at the most and, no, mine never give a two weeks' notice either. LOL! My laundry room isn't ready to show yet either so don't feel bad about the office delay. It takes so much time and when you work a ton of overtime like us this time of year it takes even longer. I hope to have mine ready soon but you know how it goes. Have a great night. Cindy

Lynn,
I'm so sorry for your loss.
Sounds like you and little black box were very close, more than just an 'employer/employee' relationship. =)

Here's to little white box holding up better.

Lynne so glad to hear your Bill came through his procedures fine. So sorry you had to wait so long and sure sorry your little black box gave out on you. Can't wait to see the office it's been quite an ordeal and I am so glad that things are nearly back in order. Love, Cindy

Yep, I know the feeling. Actually my hubby has worn out a few shredders. Our latest shredder cuts in smaller pieces, so it would be more difficult for a thief to piece together the shredded paper. Just a thought for your next one! ♥ Diane

That's alot of paper! I need to do this also, just keep putting it off. Maybe if I didn't spend so much time blogging, I really don't know how you do it all. Sorry about Mr. Black Box' demise - do you have to report this to OSHA lol? Have a great day, Kathy

Lynne, Proud of you for purging! This summer my daughter who was home from college went on a streak and told me, "This feels good!" Nice to clear out the cobwebs in more ways than one!

I hope your DH is feeling OK. It is so frustrating to have to sit and wait when you have an appointment!!!! :D Jewel

Hi Lynne...Ohhh! I love to purge files! When I retired from teaching, I spent the whole year trashing entire files!! Yes, we would finish a unit and I would throw away the whole file!! Yaaah!!! Another file closer to freedom! Have a great day!...Debbie

Hi Lynne...we have a little cheapy shredder that I shred junk mail with...but last year when DH & I decided to shred boxes & boxes of stuff...I talked him into making a small fire in a metal can thingy & we had a bonfire going in no time...I don't really think this was legit here in town, but we were very careful... ;-) Bo

Good morning Lynne, Glad Mr. P's eye surgery went fine. And doesn't it feel good getting cleaned up and getting rid of unnecessary papers? Good luck!...Christine

Glad to hear your husband did well with his eye surgery. Sorry about the waiting - that can get very frustrating. I overworked a shredder a while back - actually I don't think it was a "good employee" from the beginning. :-)
Have a good day.

While I don't have much, I do have a file drawer and a plastic box and we need to go through it and make nice. I hate doing this and breathe a sigh of relief when it is all in the accountant's hands. I have a big tub in storage that is half my Moms and half mine and it will be beyond the time limit before I sort it out. I am now much more efficient about my records than in years past. I love my little shredder too! Can't wait to see the re-do.

I waited one day for over three hours to see my Cardiologist/Internist. I was finally told he was held up at the hospital with an emergency. He is also DH's Doctor. I was so relieved that DH wasn't the emergency, that I didn't really mind rescheduling. Wish he could give me back the three lost hours of my life though.

As for employee "black box", most if not all shredders have a safety shut off to keep them from overheating. After a brief rest, "black box" might work as good as new. If there is a recycling facility near you, Dixie that is a good option. When I worked for a recycler we paid more for computer shred than any other kind of paper. Can't be mixed with other paper though. Bo, around here we have to call the State Forestry Service (local number) and get a permit number to burn. Outside burning even in a burning barrel is prohibited a good part of the year. Considering recent events in Australia I understand the policy, even though our hose is less than six feet from our barrel, which is never left unattended during a burn session.

Lynne, Diane is right. A cross-cut shredder will be the next one I buy. Don't work too hard and tell your DH to feel better soon.

Best of luck to hubby, with the cataract's opps. Waiting at such, is unacceptable though. :-(

Wonderful job of shredding and de-cluttering! And I agree, I too like everything in order.

Doesn't mean that I always succeed in keeping things that way. But when I do, it is ohhhh soooo relaxing for me. Guess we share an Idiosyncrasy. :-)

Hi Lynne, Oh good! I'm glad it went well for him. I really was worried.

I can understand fully about your office needs...
I must have an organized one or I just don't feel right. I think I may have a touch of of OCD the things that I notice that others don't. I just call it the decorating bug! LOL!

I can't wait to see the finished results!
Have a wonderful day my friend.

Mornin' Girlfriend...

I'm sorry...I didn't realize that Bill was having cataract surgery...how is he doing? I know...I know...I just detest waiting on Drs., it seems that our time isn't worth as much as theirs!

Well my friend, I was wondering how your basement office was coming along. Yeeehawww...you are making progress! You sound like me though, you can't just go in a decorate a room without getting into the "nitty-gritty" of it all! Organization...being the key word, hehe!!! Anyway, I'm anxious to see what you've done down there!

Just wanted to tell you that I loved your pretty new blue vignette on your white hutch...and I love that white hutch! It's gorgeous, Girlfriend!!!

Have a terrific Tuesday, Sweetie...
Love ya,
Chari

I have a nutty shredder story to share .... I am on my third shredder. The first one went the way of the garbage bin because I actually got the bottom of a summer skirt caught in its teeth. Needless to say the skirt also went the way of the garbage bin. The second one, like you, I totally overworked and I am being exceedingly kind to the third. Third time's a charm?

I went with hubby yesterday for his appointment and it took almost 3 hours! Grrrrr

My shredder died over the holidays... I need to replace it soon (it burnt out when I cleaned out my files...LOL)

Have a great day!

Lynne,

You have accomplished much more than me today and I am starting to feel a little guilty. Will have to go look for some paper!!

I will also have to ponder the advantages of adding twisted metal (broken shredders) to our landfills as opposed to paper. LOL

Have a good week Lynne! :-)

I keep threatening to charge the businesses who keep sending me junk mail, that I will start charging them for wear and tear to my shredder, plus charges from my electric bill. :( My poor shredder gets overworked.

Uhm' Lynne? Hon, are you running a sweat shop over there? Poor guy was probably just wanting a pay raise and more time off. Had to go to such extremes only to find out he is replaceable. Outsourced by another that will work for cheaper wages. LOL

Thanks for your visit. Your post cracked me up. I so dislike having to deal with paperwork. I tend to hold on to it for way to long and end up with the same bags of shreds as you.

Glad your husband is doing well.

Have a happy day

Kris

You certainly turned a tragic event into a funny story! I'm so sorry for the loss of your shredder! I have a feeling (since you have 3 more filing cabinets to do), you should get a backup to have on hand. I've already said my goodbyes to that white shredder. With you around, I'm certain its days are numbered! laurie

There are few things more satisfying than a huge bag full of shredded paperwork, ready to be disposed of...you just feel lighter, don't you? :-) I'm so glad to hear that your husband's appointment went well...when they finally decided to call him in, that is. Two hours is a bit much for a delay. You can halfway understand 10, 15, 20 minutes...it seems that is just how doctor's offices operate, but two hours? Maddening!
