Are you computer savvy?

Many of you know my home has been in turmoil for the past 6 months. For those of you that don't I'll bring you up to speed. On August 27 Th we had a water pipe burst in our master bathroom. Once I discovered it, I honestly thought I could clean it up quickly and move on. Little did I know. Long story short the vanity was ruined, the war room as I fondly call it was flooded which led to flooding in my office. Walls were ruined, carpet was ruined. Many things were damaged and have since been thrown away. You would think with insurance you get things taken care of quickly and things back in order. Not in our case. I had an adjuster with the personality of a bent fence post on the windiest day. I had to deal with that, mold and other issues. The first insurance check bounced, it took 2 weeks to get that straightened out. Get the picture? Once I found contractors to come in, the first guy couldn't come due to dislocating his elbow. That put the walls on hold for many weeks. Those were finally up and I was ready for carpet. I waited and waited. Finally had to chase down our carpet guy, he dropped the ball and forgot us.. YES !! forgot us.. But finally, tomorrow is the big day. He's suppose to be here first thing to lay the carpet. I hope my excitement of a finished project isn't premature. So, today I'll be finishing up the packing of all the office paraphernalia. And guess who has to work at the other job for the next 2 days? I'm hoping I can remember the sequence of hooking the router and such back up. So.. if any of you are computer savvy drop me a comment to let me know before I unhook everything in the morning. I don't want to be without Internet today and this evening . :-)) wish me luck ...hugs ~lynne~

Hi Lynne, :)
My husband said that you should tape notes to the cord ends and their corresponding sockets so that you re-connect everything just how it is now. As for the sequence, it shouldn't matter.
Turn everything off and disconnect all power before dismantling.
Don't connect to power until everything is reassembled.
Good Luck! I really hope it all goes very smoothly.
~Warmly, Melissa :)

Hi Lynne...So glad you are getting your carpet! I was going to suggest marking with tape, but everyone seems to have already done that! My computer is mostly color-coded already and most things will only fit in one place anyway. Only the speakers drive me crazy!!! Congrats on nearing th eend of the process! Enjoy your day...Debbie

Hi Lynne...I think my previous attempt at a comment disappeared, but I was just going to repeat what seems to have already been said...mark w/ tape! Congrats on the new carpet!! Enjoy the rest of your week-end...Debbie

Lynne, I'm NO computer expert, just wanted to let you know we'll miss you, but I'm sooo happy your home will be getting back to normal. Hope 2009 holds only good things for you and yours.

Our lives are somewhat parallel right now. We had a flood in our laundry room in August. Our insurance was great though and even though it was a drip over time they could see why we couldn't see it and paid for it (I have a post coming in the next week or so about the finished room). There is a crawl space underneath it that we had to clean out and throw away. We then had a HUGE garage sale. We paid out of pocket to reroute the plumbing so this problem doesn't occur again. I've been frantically painting and trying to finish our part of the room bz the flooring people are coming Wed and Thursday. Hopefully Friday afternoon I can move my washer and dryer back in. Also, work just sent me a new computer and monitor so TODAY I have to have my husband or kids hook it up for me so that I'm ready to work Monday. I don't know how to do it so I'm no help to you on that. Our biggest problem getting the laundry room (bathroom too since flooring goes into there) finished is that we're such a small job it was hard to get contractors out and then we had hundreds to pay out of pocket so it's been a five month upheaval!

Good luck and yes do label.

Glenda/MidSouth said...

I am not computer savvy! My daughter hooked mine up. The labeling would have been my suggestion also. I am so sorry about all your damage and problems getting everything worked out. It would just be so simple if some of these companies would do their job right and when they are suppose the first time.

Yes, I'm with the labeling crowd. Good luck - I know you are looking forward to everything being finished! Sally

MMM honestly, I can say that hooking up in sequence has never been an issue for me as far as the routers etc go..but getting them in the right ports is...so i echo the color code calls or the labels :)
and yes power control!

glad the cleanup is well under control hate to hear about the mass effects of destruction though...
glad you are safe and fingers crossed for powering up!

Hi Lynne, you can color code the ends to match the slots of the computer, so you would remember where to reconnect them to. Another alternative will be to label. You can use a scoth tape (tape it around the cords, label with a marker and label where you pulled them out from also). God luck!...Christine

Lisa (aka) French said...

Best advice I can give is use little stickers and lab el each cord before unplugging that way once you have to put it back together you know exactly where it goes;) Hugs and best of luck! French;)

Label... maybe even take a few pictures....

before you disconnect do a quick search on your router and refresh your memory on how to hook it back up

better yet...print out a copy!

We've just been throught a lot of this. I pray that guy comes and does a beautiful job of laying your carpet and you can back to your life and keep showing us your beautiful things. I don't know if I've told you or not, but my husband's office (where I puter) is call The War Room too! He loves his wars!! lol

I agree with the taping and take pictures with your digital camera before you unplug everything. That worked for me. I am sorry about the crap you have had to deal with. Gosh, i hear so much negative stuff with contracters not showing , ect. Don't people need work? who is your insurance co? If you are really unhappy with them spread the word. I will send you some of my "Patience" skills. . I have a little left over thanks to my Happy pills. Lol. take care. mishelle

I'd have to agree with all of those who have said to make tags and either # them or indicate in some way on them, where they should be plugged in.

This is what has helped me in all my many moves since I got the computer and before that...with DVD/CD players. LOL!!

I have been there and did that. Except my insurance had me call a water damage specialist right away, We ripped out the vanity, walls, ceiling, carpet, etc.... in the bathroom, bedroom and hallway. They brought in huge... fans for a couple of days. I worked really hard at getting everyone to replace things ASAP. It went very well until it came to the last thing. The plumber!!! He took at least a month to get there. I did all of the priming, painting and hanging wallpaper. The insurance company paid me.. to do it. if you do any work yourself keep track of your time. Maybe they'll pay you, too!! I hope the carpet goes well. I used to sell flooring for about 4 years. (I also sold furniture, etc). I can't understand forgetting about somebody.
Hugs, Terrie

Oh, good!! Yeah, sServ pro are the ones that cleaned ours up. They had to drive a hour to get there. But, they did a excellent job!!

Lynne.. when all else fails... call computer nerds.. they'll be happy to come hook up everything and make sure it's working for only $99. You obviously don't have a teenager in the house.. yes, I last one left a few years ago, but they are mighty handy when it comes to taking care of computer issues... wouldn't let one move back home though... that's why I know about computer nerds... they charge you $$$.. but then they leave.. ;)

Oh Lynne, leave your computer unhooked for awhile, and just sit and look at that carpet! You owe it to yourself! I say this, because I have no advice. I am, sadly, very computer challenged. Good luck. laurie

Make sure you write down the info for the way your e-mail is setup, just in case that information gets corrupted during the dismantling and reconnecting of the system.

If you can, do the same about the way your router is setup. I have a wireless router and at times it has proven a little tricky. I felt a couple of times like I had to reinvent the wheel, when it had worked fine before we had to mess with the system.

Susan (Between Naps On The Porch.net) said...

I'm so late reading this that you proabably have everything disconnected by now. Ditto on all the labeling stuff. You can always call your DSL or cable company for some help if you have trouble getting stuff going again. Best of luck...can't wait to see your new carpet. Sorry you've been through so much aggravation...maybe you can file a complaint with the BBB on the contractor and with the State Ins. Licensing board or whoever insurance agencies have to report to. Morning Lynne~

I had no idea that all this was going on with you. Sounds like you've received good tips on marking the cords, etc. We don't want you to be without your pc. :)

It's hard to find good contractors now-a-days. I'm still waiting on the roofers to come look at my roof after Hurricane Ike ( that was 9/12. )

Hope everything works out & your carpet gets installed, properly and with good seams~ that's a big pet peave of mine. :)

Hugs~ J

I bought a pack of 8 colors of electrical tape for just this kind of occasion. I put one color on the cord and the same color on the matching port. That way I can see where everything goes back. I've used that colored tape for a million other reasons..the dang stuff comes in handy. Good luck and I hope they finally get you back in tip top shape. What a mess that must have been!

I am so sorry! I did laugh out loud at your description of your wonderful adjuster!!! Bent fence post... Bounced check...I didn't know that would happen with our trusty Insurances.
We too had water damage from a plugged P-Trap in November right before Thanksgiving. What a mess and it is amazing at how fast the damage flows from room to room and in our case floor to floor.
Ours isn't fixed yet as we were waiting for dry wall to dry out and then we had two weddings and the holidays...
I am happy you are getting it all back together and even better than before with new carpet:) I liked what everyone said about color coding the ends for your computer. I will remember that tip!
Thanks for your comments on my hijacked blog:) I really am looking forward to getting to know you better also.
Beth~♥

Good luck with reconnecting the pc. Looks like you had lots of good advise.

Have a wonderful day.
